  • Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, has launched the ‘National Behaviour Change Communication Framework for Garbage Free Cities’ to strengthen the ongoing jan andolan for ‘Garbage Free Cities’
  • Urban India has seen a social revolution in the field of sanitation, with one hundred and thirty crore citizens rallying behind the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s clarion call for ‘Clean India’ to become a developmental priority during his Independence Day Speech on 15th August 2014.
  • Over the last seven years, this Government policy for cleanliness has metamorphosed to become the world’s largest behaviour change programme that champions the principles of sustainable urbanization, circular economy, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

  • As part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ – to celebrate 75 years of India’s Independence, Rural Electrification Corporation Limited, a public infrastructure finance company under the Ministry of Power organized a ‘Bijli Utsav’ in the states of Manipur, Odisha and Chattisgarh.
  • The date of the event was specifically chosen as 28th April 2022 since it marks the four years anniversary of successfully providing access to electricity infrastructure to all villages under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY).
  • As a mark of the occasion, Leisang Village of Manipur was one of the villages where the event was held since it was the last village to be connected to the grid under the DDUGJY Scheme on 28th April 2018. The village electrification drive of the country was also recognized as one of the greatest success stories by the International Energy Agency.

  • Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari inaugurated 12 National Highway Projects of total length of 460 Km worth Rs. 8000 Crore and 7 CRIF Projects in Hyderabad .
  • The NH Projects of a total length 460 KM with an investment of ₹ 8,000 Crore will boost the inter state connectivity by enabling seamless travel from Telangana to Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
  • The fast paced Highway development will boost trade and commerce in the region and create sustainable employment opportunities for the youth.

  • The first known human case of H5 bird flu in the USA has appeared in a person in Colorado. The person tested positive for avian influenza a H5 virus and was involved in the culling of poultry presumed to have had H5N1 bird flu. This case does not change the human risk for the assessment for the general public which CDC consider to be low.

5.Core sector growth slows down to 4.3% in March FY2

  • The production growth of eight infrastructure sectors slowed down to 4.3 per cent in March due to a decline in the output of coal and crude oil, though for the full 2021-22 fiscal, the core sector recorded a 10.4 per cent expansion.
  •  The eight infrastructure sectors – coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilizer, steel, cement and electricity – had expanded by 6 per cent in February.
  • During April-March 2021-22, the eight sectors grew by 10.4 per cent compared to a contraction of 6.4 per cent in 2020-21.

6.Star9 Mobility to buy 51% govt stake in Pawan Hans for Rs 211.14 cr.

  • This is the second successful privatization in the civil aviation space after the Air India sale.
  • The government will sell its 51 per cent stake in Pawan Hans to Star9 Mobility Pvt Ltd for Rs 211 crore.
  • Pawan Hans has been incurring losses in the last three years. It has a fleet of 42 helicopters, of which 41 are owned by it.
  • The owned helicopters have an average age of 20 years, and the original equipment manufacturer has stopped manufacturing three-fourths of them.

  • Sprng Energy supplies solar and wind power to electricity distribution companies in India, seen as a major growth market in the power sector in the coming decades.
  • Shell  agreed to acquire India-based renewable power platform Sprng Energy for $1.55 billion, boosting the energy company’s low-carbon output as it shifts away from oil and gas.
  • Shell said it would buy 100 per cent of Solenergi Power Private Limited, the flagship company of Sprng Energy group, from UK-based investor Actis.
  • Sprng Energy supplies solar and wind power to electricity distribution companies in India, seen as a major growth market in the power sector in the coming decades.
  • Sprng Energy’s portfolio consists of 2.9 gigawatts-peak (GWp) of assets and a further 7.5 GWp of renewable energy projects in the pipeline.

  • With the overarching aim of providing critical medical aid to Sri Lanka during the ongoing crisis, INS Gharial as part of Mission SAGAR IX arrived at Colombo on 29 Apr 22 and delivered over 760 kgs of 107 types of critical lifesaving medicines.
  • The shipment was received by Health Minister of Sri Lanka, Hon’ble Channa Jayasumana, and would be supplied to the University of Peradeniya Hospital.

  •  Lieutenant General Baggavalli Somashekar Raju will take over as the next army vice chief on May 1, replacing Lieutenant General Manoj Pande who takes charge as India’s 29th army chief .
  • Raju, a qualified helicopter pilot, is currently the army’s director general of military operations (DGMO) and in that capacity, he was closely monitoring the lingering two-year border standoff with China in the sensitive Ladakh sector.

Russia will not host World University Games in 2023.

  • The International University Sports Federation (FISU) said it has decided to postpone the Russian city of Yekaterinburg’s hosting rights for the 2023 World University Games.
  • FISU has already barred Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from taking part in its events until at least the end of the year over Moscow’s military intervention in Ukraine. It has also stripped Russia and Belarus of three events scheduled to take place in 2022.
